Corner Café & Kitchen is one of several Moscow establishments that I periodically recommend to readers, friends and acquaintances when it comes to quality Pan-Asian cuisine. And since recommendations need to be answered, I visit my chosen ones from time to time. On Thursday evening it was the turn of Kobayashi Katsuhiko’s project at the corner of Kompozitorskaya Street and Trubnikovsky Lane to take the rap.

During my absence, some changes took place in the layout of the cafe. The entrance moved into the hall, the dressing room and dessert counter disappeared, and the arrangement of tables changed. The semicircular outer wall remained the same. She was still occupied by narrow windows and photographs of personal production. In the far corner, as before, there was a bar counter with high perch stools, only now there was a glass cabinet with desserts next to it. In the center the space was divided by a rack with bottles of sake. Here and there you could see inserts of rough wood. The floor was shiny parquet. Instead of a wardrobe there are hanger sticks. The furniture is comfortable. The distances between tables are commendable. The lighting is bright. There are no dark spots in the hall. But the temperature during my visit was not very comfortable. The air conditioning clearly did not work, and there was not enough air from the open windows.

The menu fits on two sides of an A4 sheet. The set is small, appetizing, pan-Asian. The author's point of view is noticeable both in the combinations of ingredients and in the names. The prices are friendly and do not pose a risk to the budget. Portions are moderate and are designed for one adult eater. “Tataki tuna according to Kobayashi’s original recipe” (560 rubles) is a beautiful pink tuna composition in which each flavor shade played its part and did it flawlessly, creating a unique tasty idyll. The fish is tender, juicy and appetizing. The sauce is sweetish, with a ponzu flavor. The spices are balanced.

“Grilled bamboo root” (380 rubles) – exclusively for amateurs. The two almost brown halves had a distinctly sweet pickled flavor and a firm texture similar to that of a turnip. Unusual, but interesting.

“Salad Ban Ban Ji” (380 rubles), alas, did not impress, and the reason for this was the lack of taste. Each component told its own story and did not want to listen to others. The vegetables and salad were fresh and crisp, but did not go well with the strips of dry, cold cooked chicken and the overly thick, spicy sauce.

But “Homemade Japanese dumplings “Gedza” with shrimp” (420 rubles) did not disappoint. The dough is thin, lightly fried, without cuts, holes or extra folds. The filling is soft, tasty, shrimpy. The sauce is sour, cheerful, complementing.

“Donburi with tuna and avocado” (690 rubles) is a Japanese version of Rice Bowl, which at Corner Café & Kitchen was treacherously attacked by dry nori shavings. The tuna was good. The avocado was ripe. The rice is moderately soft and warm. The sauce had a combination of sweetness and citrus acidity. But, unfortunately, all these good ingredients were dominated by black stripes of dried seaweed. They very quickly mixed with the sauce, got wet, then stuck to the rice and turned it into big gooey lumps that killed the essence of the dish.

“Cold chili-miso ramen” (520 rubles) is an excellent summer version of the Japanese classic. Looks delicious. The taste is multifaceted. The cold broth is rich. The noodles are elastic. Bamboo, meat inclusions, fresh vegetables, egg and shrimp are of high quality. So no complaints.

“Grilled Marbled Kalbi Beef Yakiniku Style” (RUB 840) – a combination of Japanese and Korean cuisines on one plate, which arrived in the form of a handful of very fatty layers of meat on a lettuce leaf. The sauce and marinade turned out excellent, but the beef itself, or rather the cuts from the ribs, had too many “rubbery” layers that were difficult to chew and stretched indecently.

As for desserts, we were once again pleased with the classic from Kobayashi - “Matcha Fondant with Vanilla Ice Cream” (320 rubles). The dough is tender. The filling is spreadable. The taste is subtle and not at all cloying.

The “Apricot Pie” (280 rubles) was a little less bright, but still tasty. Although the orange fruit was sour, together with the cream and dough they made a delicious, fresh combination.

A calm young man was in charge of service. He tried to keep an eye on the room and wasn’t particularly distracted by anything, but he didn’t always have time and not everywhere. It is a pity that other employees did not help him in any way, but went about their own personal affairs.

The result is this:

Despite some missteps in food and service, Corner Café & Kitchen still offers guests an interesting author's Panasia performed by the talented and respected Kobayashi Katsuhiko. It’s a pity, of course, that this establishment still doesn’t reach five points, but even at this level it remains on my list of recommendations.
