History of the creation of the Salud company

Our story of getting to know village life began with a trip to visit friends’ parents in the village a year ago, when the family was just expecting the birth of a baby. In the village, Baba Sasha has a large family, everyone works on the land - their own garden, chickens and livestock. For two weeks, grandma carefully fed us with her products and during this time we discovered the amazing taste of village milk and sour cream, natural vegetables from the garden, wild berries and homemade pickles. And when we returned back to the city, we discovered that the products that we regularly buy in supermarkets and markets are not at all as tasty and fresh as those from the countryside.

With the advent of the baby, we completely reconsidered the diet and the origin of the products on our table. Thus, there was a constant need for environmentally friendly and natural products. It is difficult to buy products with guaranteed quality in the markets, because you never know who you are buying from - the manufacturer or just a reseller. It is also impossible to say exactly how and where this product was produced.

And since there were simply no other offers, we, together with like-minded people, decided to unite and find farmers from whom we could buy products for ourselves. We began to go to the village once a week and buy eggs, cottage cheese, homemade sour cream, meat, vegetables, berries and honey for ourselves and friends. Then for familiar friends, and friends of acquaintances. Over time, the volume of products that we brought from the village became so large that we decided to create a small website on which all our friends and acquaintances could order and receive fresh village products delivered to their homes. So we organized a company for the delivery of farm products.

Why Salud

We didn't think about the name for a long time. The year before last, my wife and I vacationed in the Dominican Republic. We really liked their culture and attitude to life, they are so cheerful, real holiday people. They seem to be constantly dancing and singing their fiery Latin tunes. Positive all around! And when it came time to choose a name for the company, we decided to look through Spanish words and found the word “Salud” - “health”. It is consonant with the word “fireworks” - a beautiful, bright and cheerful holiday. But it’s true, the taste of natural products, health, benefits, positive energy and the joy they bring - this is a real holiday!

Red East

The Krasny Vostok agricultural holding was created in 2003 with an authorized capital of 5 billion rubles on the basis of 68 agricultural enterprises located in 6 regions of the Republic of Tatarstan. Agroholding "Krasny Vostok" is a unique and largest agricultural production in Russia. The company's activities are aimed at the industrial production of milk of the highest quality, the creation of a base of highly productive breeding young animals, crop production, as well as grain processing and storage. Over the 7 years of the company’s activity, about 25 billion rubles were invested in the project for the development of agricultural production. Part of the agricultural holding structure, the Krasny Vostok Agro company, according to the rating of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, is recognized as the leader in milk production in the Russian Federation. Today, the total number of breeding cattle is 88,000 heads, including 28,000 heads of dairy cattle. In order to implement this investment project, 10 of Europe's largest megafarms were built in open fields. Each complex is designed for 4-8 thousand heads of cattle. Plemennoye Delo LLC, part of the Krasny Vostok agricultural holding, is today the only company in Russia engaged in raising highly productive breeding young stock and creating a genetic bank on an industrial scale. A division of the agricultural holding CJSC Vostokzernoprodukt is engaged in the production of crop products on 350,000 hectares of land owned by the company, and has more than 20,000 units of modern agricultural machinery. The task of the enterprise is to produce grain and high-quality feed on its own territories located in Tatarstan, Ulyanovsk, Tambov, Kursk and Voronezh regions. Grain processing and storage is carried out by Tatarstan Grain Technologies OJSC, also part of the Krasny Vostok agricultural holding. The company has 10 of its own elevators with a total capacity of 500,000 tons. In 2007, our own seed plant with a capacity of 20 tons per day was built. The plant is equipped with modern equipment that allows precise control of the process of cleaning and sorting seeds with minimal losses and high profitability. During the existence of the Krasny Vostok Agroholding, more than 5 thousand jobs have been created, the average salary is 10-12 thousand rubles.

How was the Agroinvestor rating compiled?

The basis is data on pork and chicken producers collected by the National Union of Pig Breeders and the Russian Poultry Union. Since the production of other types of meat and poultry in the country is less developed, the list for participation in the rating was formed from the 20 largest companies producing pork and broilers.

It is worth noting that many enterprises develop both poultry and pig farming at the same time, and can also raise cattle. However, their volumes could be too small to be included in the lists of the NSS and the Rosptitsoyuz. Therefore, at the next stage, using open sources, clarification was carried out on the presence of enterprises on the market and the approximate volumes of their production. Based on data published by companies on their own websites and open sources, leading enterprises in the Russian beef and turkey market were analyzed.

Questionnaires were then sent to all companies included in the preliminary list, and companies whose production volumes were believed to also allow them to compete for the title of “chief butcher of the country.” The questionnaires asked questions about volumes in slaughter weight, but most enterprises sent information about live meat. Therefore, Agroinvestor itself calculated the indicators that correspond to slaughter weight. The following coefficients were used in the calculations: 0.82 for poultry; 0.78 for pork; 0.58 for cattle meat. Such coefficients differ from the industry averages (0.75; 0.77; 0.57, respectively), but it was precisely based on them that the Federal State Statistics Service made calculations for agricultural enterprises in 2015.

Enterprises that did not provide their indicators were assessed based on open sources: data on official websites (annual reports, news); documents that were published on public disclosure resources; articles in the media; information from industry unions; expert opinions, etc.

The resulting numbers were rounded to tenths. If the production volume of at least one type of poultry or meat was calculated from a market source, a footnote “estimate” was placed in the table.

What are the strategies of the meat market leaders?

Russian leaders in meat production do not have a single strategy. Daria Snitko, an expert at the Public Council under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, believes that raw materials enterprises selling products in the form of half carcasses and semi-finished products will mainly target regional markets in Russia and export meat to foreign countries. And organizations involved in various types of meat will begin to invest more effort in processing and developing their own brand. The strategies of American and Brazilian companies will serve as a guide for them. Such enterprises will be able to significantly influence the Russian meat market, develop the sphere of ready-made meals and semi-finished products, and establish successful cooperation with companies operating in the field of catering and hotel management.

09.08.2017 19:20 “Moscow cold storage plant No. 14” (Moscow)— “Agroinvestor” has compiled a rating of the “main butchers of the state” for the first time. It included 20 enterprises that totaled 4 million tons of meat in slaughter weight (unless otherwise stated, slaughter weight will always be implied). They accounted for 42% of the meat produced in the Russian Federation, and 56% in agricultural organizations.

Three Russian leaders - over 400 thousand tons per year

The TOP 3 included companies that significantly outperformed their competitors. Together they produced just under 1.6 million tons of meat, or 39% of the total TOP-20 volumes.

Cherkizovo Group is the winner among meat producers

In 2015, enterprises belonging to the Cherkizovo group produced 573 thousand tons of chicken and 169 thousand tons of pork in live weight, or only 601.7 thousand tons in slaughter weight. The calculations were carried out by Agroinvestor employees, based on data provided by the company. Thus, the winner takes the top line, with a lead of over 75 thousand tons.

The large holding includes 8 poultry farms located in the Central and Volga regions, their revenue amounted to 44.6 billion rubles. And 15 pork production complexes brought Cherkizovo 16.6 billion. A group of companies is building a pig-breeding cluster in the Voronezh and Lipetsk regions. Investments in it amount to 9 billion rubles, and the capacity will be 70 thousand tons in live weight. By 2018, the holding plans to double its pork production capacity. And in the fall of 2016, an enterprise with a design capacity of 50 thousand tons of live weight per year, Tambov Turkey, should begin operating. The ambitions of the group of companies will most likely not allow other meat producers to knock Cherkizovo off the pedestal.

The Prioskolye company took second place

The silver winner was the Prioskolye company, which is the largest poultry producer in the state. In 2015, poultry farms produced 642.2 thousand tons of broiler in live weight: in the Belgorod region - 451 thousand tons, in the Tambov region - 121.9 thousand tons, in the Altai Territory - 69.3 thousand tons. The total volume was 526.6 thousand tons in slaughter weight. The holding's production sites are operating at full design capacity, and sales of poultry meat amounted to 516.4 thousand tons.

Miratorg Holding is in third position

Miratorg produced 438.9 thousand tons of meat. The group of companies is the largest producer of pork and beef in Russia. In 2015, the holding produced 322.8 thousand tons of pork, 40.5 thousand tons of beef, 75.6 thousand tons of chicken. Miratorg plans to increase its volumes - the production of poultry meat at processing plants will be increased by 1.5 thousand heads per hour, which will make it possible to produce 117.8 thousand tons of broilers in 2016. In addition, the holding will begin to increase the beef segment. And the organization is ready to invest over 100 billion rubles in the development of pork production. A new agricultural complex will be opened in the Kursk region. It will unite a grain company, feed factories and a modern high-tech plant for slaughtering pigs and processing their meat. The planned capacity of the plant is over 4 million carcasses per year. If the holding's ambitions are realized, it will be able to come close to the leader, and perhaps even compete for first place among meat processors.

Second three - over 200 thousand tons of meat per year

The gap between the enterprises that took prizes is less than 100 thousand tons. But the difference between third and fourth place exceeds this value. However, all companies included in the TOP 6 produced over 200 thousand tons of meat in 2015.

Agro-industrial holding "BEZRK-Belgrankorm" took fourth place

In 2015, the organization produced 294.4 thousand tons of broilers and 69.6 thousand tons of pork. Compared to 2014, BEZRK-Belgrankorm increased its live weight indicators by 17 and 41%, respectively. According to Agroinvestor’s calculations, the total volume in slaughter weight is 295.7 thousand tons. For 2016, the agricultural holding plans to increase poultry production to at least 347 thousand tons in live weight, and pork production to 76 thousand tons. "BEZRK-Belgrankorm" also has dairy cattle, but the tail volume of beef meat production is unknown. However, it is obvious that this indicator would still not shift the holding’s position in the rating.

The Resurs group of agricultural enterprises is in fifth place

In 2015, the agro-industrial company produced 330 thousand tons of broiler in live weight or approximately 270.6 thousand tons in slaughter weight. Resurs plans to increase poultry production: in 2016 it wants to process 420 thousand tons in live weight, and in 2017 - 550 thousand tons.

At the moment, the agricultural holding is engaged in the construction of a vertically integrated poultry complex. The new enterprise will be located in the Tambov region, the production capacity will be 150 thousand tons. This project was included in the government-supported financing program in 2015. In 2017, work on the construction of a hatchery, 7 sites for raising broiler chickens, a poultry processing plant and a feed production plant should be completed. The total investment in this project is 9 billion rubles.

Charoen Pokpand Foods took sixth position

The Russian subsidiary of the Thai company Charoen Pokphand Foods (CP Foods), part of the conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), completes the number of meat producers that have processed more than 200 thousand tons. The Severnaya poultry farm, purchased from the Dutch organization Agro Invest Brinky, produced 195 thousand tons of broiler. Pig-breeding plants produced a total of 40 thousand tons of live weight or 31.2 thousand tons of slaughter weight.

CP Foods owns almost 76% of the RBPI group (Russia Baltic Pork Invest), which manages: Pravdinskoe Pig Production in the Kaliningrad region and the pig farm NNPP LLC in the Nizhny Novgorod region. RBPI has plans for 2015-2018 to build 7 pig farms to increase the number of pigs for slaughter to 2 million per year. The company's long-term plans include occupying 6% of the Russian pork market. Thai investors also mentioned an increase in agricultural production in the Russian Federation.

Meat producers who produced more than 100 thousand tons per year

From 7th to 14th position are companies that produced over 100 thousand tons of meat products in 2015.

Agroholding "White Bird" is in 7th place

According to the Rospoultry Union, the holding's enterprises produced 236 thousand tons of broiler in live weight or 193.5 thousand tons in slaughter weight in 2015. These data differ from the information provided by the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies - 240 thousand tons and 196.8 thousand tons, respectively. “White Bird” did not specify the number of products produced. Since 3.3 thousand tons would still not change the position of the agricultural holding, when preparing the rating, Agroinvestor staff took into account the indicator of the Russian Poultry Union.

The Prodo group of companies took 8th place

The company's results amounted to 192.4 thousand tons. According to industry unions, the Omsk Bacon joint-stock company, which is part of the holding, produced 44.8 thousand tons of products in 2015, poultry farms produced 192 thousand tons in live weight. Now the Prodo Group of Companies is working to expand the capacity of the pig-breeding complex from the planned 50 thousand to 70 thousand tons per year and the Sibirskaya poultry farm from 45 thousand to 70 thousand in live weight.

The holding has a herd of dairy cattle: 4 thousand heads according to the official website, of which 2.15 thousand are dairy cows. The volume of by-product meat production is unknown exactly, but in order to compensate for the gap from 6th place of 1.1 thousand tons, it is necessary to produce 1.9 thousand tons of live weight livestock. And this is hardly achievable with the indicated number of dairy cows.

Agrarian holding "Akashevo" is located on the 9th line of the rating

According to the Rosptitsoyuz, Akashevo produced 203 thousand tons of poultry meat in live weight per year or, according to Agroinvestor’s calculations, 166.5 thousand tons in slaughter weight. In 2015, the agricultural holding received project financing with state support for the construction of a poultry complex with a design capacity of 17.3 thousand tons. Its cost is about 8.4 billion rubles.

The Rusargo group of companies is in 10th position

According to the NSS, the agricultural holding's livestock complexes processed 195.2 thousand tons of pork in live weight, which corresponds to 152.3 thousand tons in slaughter weight. Among pig-breeding enterprises, the organization took second position and received 6% of the Russian market. The planned production capacity of the companies, which are located in the Belgorod and Tambov regions and belong to the agricultural holding, is 198 thousand tons of pigs. The revenue of Rusargo Group of Companies received for the sale of meat was 18.1 billion rubles. The organization's EBITDA is 7.7 billion rubles.

In 2016, Rusargo plans to produce 206 thousand tons of meat. And under the project financing program with state support, the agricultural holding will build a pig-breeding cluster in Primorye. First, 10 complexes will be built with a capacity of 79 thousand tons of live weight per year. The total investment volume will be 15.8 billion rubles. According to the agricultural holding’s calculations, the complexes will reach their designed capacity in 2022. And due to this, the company’s EBITDA will increase by 10.1 billion.

Agro-industrial company "Agro-Belogorye" in 11th position

The holding produced 162.9 thousand tons of pork and 0.7 thousand tons of beef in live weight (127.5 thousand tons and 0.4 thousand tons in slaughter weight, respectively). The design capacity of the Agro-Belogorye pig-breeding complexes is 136 thousand tons per year, therefore, in 2015 they produced 19.6% more than their capacity.

In 2016, the agricultural holding drew up a production program in which a slight reduction in production volumes was planned. But in fact, the figures for the first two quarters are 5.8% higher than planned. In the first six months of operation, the companies belonging to the holding produced 83.7 thousand tons of pork in live weight, i.e. 122% of design capacity. Agro-Belogorye will expand its business and will invest 9.7 billion rubles in its development. This money will be used to build a feed production plant and 5 new pig-breeding complexes with a capacity of 54 thousand tons. This will significantly increase production volumes - up to 217 thousand tons per year.

JSC firm "Agrokompleks" named after N.I. Tkachev is in 12th place in the ranking

The company, which was founded by the father of the Russian Minister of Agriculture, processed 97.3 thousand tons of broiler in live weight in 2015, which is 79.8 thousand tons in slaughter weight. The Agrocomplex report also states that 10.14 thousand tons of cattle meat were produced. Since Agroinvestor was unable to obtain clarification about exactly what weight this was, in the calculations of the rating the indicators were taken as slaughter yield. They did the same with pork meat, of which, according to the company, 11.5 thousand tons were produced. It is worth noting that the indicators of Kuban Bacon, which became part of the holding only at the end of 2015, were not added to the total volume in the organization’s report. But according to a source close to Akgrokompleks, the total volume of pork production, including Kuban Bacon, is approximately 47 thousand tons in live weight (36.7 thousand tons in slaughter weight). The company did not answer Agroinvestor’s questions, so the source data was used for the rating.

The agro-industrial holding KoPitania is located on the 13th line

The company did not provide its own data on its volumes, therefore, when compiling the rating, NSS data was taken that the agricultural holding produced 93.2 thousand tons of pork in live weight (72.7 thousand tons in slaughter weight), and information from a source close to the company, on processing 50 thousand tons of broilers in live weight (41 thousand tons in slaughter weight). Consequently, the total volume was 113.7 thousand tons.

JSC Siberian Agrarian Group took 14th place

The Siberian Agrarian Group also managed to cross the 100 thousand mark: the company produced 104.8 thousand tons of meat. Organizations belonging to the agricultural holding produced 77.3 thousand tons of pork and 33.5 thousand tons of chicken in live weight. The agricultural enterprise's revenue from the sale of meat in 2015 amounted to 10.6 billion rubles excluding VAT, and its net profit was 1.98 billion.

Final places in the ranking

From 15 to 20 positions are meat producers that produced less than 100 thousand tons.

CJSC "Agrosila Group" is on the 15th line of the rating

The Chelny-Broiler poultry farm, a member of the agricultural holding, produced 84.5 thousand tons of chicken in 2015, and livestock farms produced 4 thousand tons of cattle meat. Thus, Agrosila Group produced 88.5 thousand tons of meat. For the sale of broilers, the company earned 9.8 billion rubles, and the organization’s net profit amounted to over 1.5 billion rubles.

In 2016, the holding plans to produce 86.1 thousand tons of poultry. If you look at the work for the first six months, you can see that the plan was exceeded by 4%. The company wants to produce about 6 thousand tons of beef.

At the moment, Agrosila Group is building the Chulman technopolis and a chicken processing complex with a capacity of 144 tons per day. When the projects start working, the holding will produce 220 thousand tons of broiler per year. A representative of Agrosila Group said that the company’s total investment in poultry farming is 14 billion rubles. The money is distributed as follows: 9.7 billion comes from bank loans, 3 billion from the agricultural holding’s own funds, 1.7 billion from state support from the regional and federal budgets. The last amount is spent on infrastructure development. The organization is also building a feedlot for 5 thousand bulls, which will produce 3 thousand tons of beef per year. It should be built in 2016. The company's plans include ideas for creating its own workshop for cattle slaughter.

The Healthy Farm group of companies took 16th place

The agro-industrial association "Healthy Farm", whose assets were transferred to Rusgrain Holding in 2015, produced 87 thousand tons of meat: 75 thousand tons of chicken and 12 thousand tons of pork. For the sale of products, the organization received 9.7 billion rubles (7.7 billion for broilers and 2 billion for pork meat). In 2016, the agricultural holding will invest about 400 million rubles in business development. 200 million are intended for the repair and modernization of the Argayashskaya and Kunashakskaya poultry farms. 60 million are invested in the Rodnikovsky pig-breeding complex. 100 million for deep processing for the Healthy Farm Delicacies division, which will allow the production of 1.5 thousand tons of products per month.

The AgroPromkomplektatsiya group of companies is in 17th position

The agricultural holding produced 102.13 thousand tons of pork in live weight or 79.7 thousand tons in slaughter weight. In addition, the company is developing dairy farming. It is not known exactly how much beef was harvested, but the likelihood that its weight will be more than 7.3 thousand tons (which corresponds to the difference between 16 and 17 lines on the list) is close to zero. Consequently, dairy cattle do not affect their place in the ranking.

Currently, AgroPromkomplektatsiya is finishing the construction of a meat processing complex in the Kursk region. Its capacity will be 300 heads per hour. The enterprise will be able to produce a diverse range of products - from half carcasses to highly processed products. Raw materials for the complex will be taken from 5 pig farms located in the region. In addition, 5 more sites will be put into operation in 2016, which will reach full design capacity in 2017. According to NSS calculations, by 2020 the agricultural holding will be able to produce 162 thousand tons of pork in live weight per year.

Agricultural group "Good Delo" took 18th place

The company is part of the Sfera Group of Companies. In 2015, the holding's organizations produced 73.9 thousand tons of meat: 72.6 thousand tons of chicken, 1.3 thousand tons of pork, 85 tons of beef. The total sales volume exceeded 15 billion rubles. A representative of the agricultural group said that at the Yubileiny meat processing complex there are 2 lines for poultry slaughter: for 9 thousand broilers per hour and for 3 thousand heads per hour for parent stock. The organization's design capacity makes it possible to process 90 thousand tons of chicken per year. 9.5 billion rubles were invested in the construction of the complex and treatment facilities.

In 2016, “Good Deed” will launch new sites for parent stock and broiler fattening, which will make it possible to increase the volume of poultry to 120 thousand tons in live weight, pork and beef - up to 6 thousand tons of each type in live weight. It is also planned to launch special equipment in processing shops. The agricultural group also plans to develop its own retail chain of stores in the Volga region.

The SITNO company is in 19th place

The SITNO agricultural holding, according to the Russian Poultry Union, produced 89 thousand tons of broiler in live weight, which according to calculations gives 73 thousand tons in slaughter weight. The company did not specify its production volumes.

Agro-industrial holding "KOMOS GROUP" completes the TOP-20

Until the latest audit carried out by Agroinvestor, the company was not considered a major player. But after recalculating the indicators, it turned out that the pig farms of the agricultural holding and the Udmurt Poultry Farm produced 41.5 thousand tons of pork and 44 thousand tons of poultry in live weight. This corresponds to 68.4 thousand tons in slaughter. Velikoluksky Meat Processing Plant, according to NSS, produced 85.2 thousand tons of pork in live weight (66.5 thousand tons in slaughter weight), which is almost 2 thousand tons less than that of KOMOS GROUP.

Expert forecasts

Daniil Khotko, an expert at the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies, believes that in the near future the top three will remain the same. The Resurs group of agricultural enterprises may approach them by increasing production and Charoen Pokpand Foods if it acquires new assets. The latter company is ready to invest in the Russian agro-industrial sector; it has the financial capacity to purchase agricultural enterprises. Therefore, it can become the leading meat producer in the country. Daniil also believes that the Rusargo Group of Companies will significantly increase its volumes and increase the production of the Velikoluksky Meat Processing Plant, which will give it the opportunity to enter the TOP 20 of the rating. The agro-industrial holding Eurodon still has good opportunities to get on the list. Poultry farms such as Oktyabrskaya, Ravis, Reftinskaya, according to the expert, will not be able to become leaders and will remain at the regional level.

Khotko claims that in the meat market in the Russian Federation there is great competition among broiler and pork producers. Small players are leaving the market, and production is concentrated in large agricultural holdings. As an example, Daniil cites the purchase of Tatmit Agro by KOMOS GROUP. Most likely, some organizations will leave the meat sector as overproduction approaches. A similar situation is observed in the United States - there are 3 enterprises that procure 60% of the country's meat.

Daria Snitko, head of the Center for Economic Forecasting at Gazprombank, also notes the high concentration of meat production in the Russian Federation. But in the expert’s opinion, organizations have room to grow. For example, the 5 largest pig-breeding complexes in the Russian Federation procure 25% of the meat, and in the USA - more than 70%. Or the largest Brazilian company accounted for 15% of the country’s meat in 2015, while the Russian company accounted for less than 10%. Daria thinks that the rating may change significantly in a few years. However, this will only happen through mergers and acquisitions, not through production growth.

Timur Nigmatullin, an analyst at Finam, also agrees that the meat industry is now expecting mergers and acquisitions, as well as cost reductions due to synergies. Meat producers included in the TOP 5 are significantly ahead of their competitors in terms of volume, so the leaders are unlikely to change. According to Timur, consolidation will take place around them.

Although he does not share such views. He believes that there will be not only M&A activity, but also organic growth. As an argument, the expert cites data on pork production: according to the results of the first six months of 2016, they increased by 15.5%. The reason for this is the investments already made in the sector, but we must not forget about new projects in the industry. But in 2017, the pace of expansion will slow down, as the domestic market approaches saturation and there are no clear prospects for exports.

Daniil believes that new enterprises are unlikely to begin developing chicken and pork projects from scratch. The situation will change only if Russian meat becomes competitive in the world. Then it will become feasible to build new complexes. And now it is more profitable to purchase an already working enterprise and implement it into the existing business processes of the agricultural holding.

Khotko believes that until 2018, the meat industry in the Russian Federation will grow due to a greater reduction in imports. However, beef meat may be an exception - Miratorg and large organizations plan to increase production, but the share of private farms will begin to decline. At least he thinks that 100% import substitution in this segment is impossible. Since 2017, citizens' incomes are expected to increase, so meat consumption will increase. Daniil believes that the 2013 maximum (75 kg per person per year) will not be reached, but even returning to it could significantly help meat producers. Broiler will remain the leader in the consumption structure, but beef will decrease its position. The expert notes that this is a normal process in conditions when population incomes are not growing. In many developed countries, beef belongs to the premium segment.

Snitko says that the Center for Economic Forecasting of Gazprombank believes that by 2020, meat consumption in the Russian Federation will increase by 6-8%. This growth may become higher, but the cattle industry still lacks projects that will provide prices adequate to demand. Daria believes that with the development of pork and chicken exports, Russian organizations will be able to better integrate into the world market, which will attract new foreign investors. The expert thinks that already in 2017 the Russian Federation may become a net exporter of broiler.

Nigmatulin believes that due to low food prices and the expected recovery in consumer demand, consumption will increase sharply. In the expert's opinion, poultry meat will be in greatest demand.

In the list of the largest meat processing plants in Russia, almost all plants belong to well-known agricultural holdings of the country. The largest meat processing plants in terms of profit are: Cherkizovsky, Ostankino, Mikoyanovsky, Velikoluksky, Ramfood, Ramensky and Starodvorsky sausages.

ChMPZ is the main meat processing enterprise within the Cherkizovo group, which is the largest agricultural holding in Russia. But the profits of this company’s factories decreased significantly in 2016. According to the holding's management, this happened for a number of reasons, including an increase in wage costs and transport taxes.

In addition, the company had to write off cash assets in the amount of 1.3 billion at a loss, since the non-refundable subsidies that the holding was counting on were never received.

In addition, the recovery from the African swine fever outbreak had a negative impact on profitability. But the scale of ChMPZ production has not decreased, which still leaves it the position of the industry leader.

The Russian meat market is an important segment of the domestic food market. According to Nielsen, 55% of Russians consider the meat department an important criterion for choosing a store.
To develop a business in this area, you need to have complete statistics and knowledge of meat market trends. In turn, marketers of the KOLORO branding agency are always ready to advise their clients on what trends in the Russian meat market are currently relevant.

Russian buyers traditionally choose familiar products. Russians still associate jamon and basturma with export goods.

The most commonly purchased meat is chicken. This product is the undisputed leader in the raw meat market in terms of sales volumes. Nielsen estimates that in 2017, chicken accounted for more than 83% of the food supply by volume. Nutritional value and relatively low cost have become the main reasons for choosing poultry meat.

Pork is used to prepare traditional Russian dishes. Its share in 2017 was almost 12%.

Lean cattle meat (veal and beef) is popular among healthy eaters and those trying to lose weight. The share of beef in the modern market is more than 2%.

Thus, a study of the Russian meat market showed very expected results: chicken, pork and beef are in greatest demand, and therefore bring the greatest profit. Interestingly, the popularity of poultry meat is increasing due to the low purchasing power of the population, due to which Russians cannot include, for example, beef or lamb in their daily diet.

Meat production in Russia - numbers

Despite the decline in the general solvency of the population, the meat market is growing. In the period from the beginning of 2017 to May alone, 3.1% more meat in live weight (3.4 million tons) was produced than in 2016.
Between January and September, the poultry sector grew the most, up 7% year-on-year. Production of meat products from slaughter pigs during this period increased by 4.5%. But the production of meat from cattle decreased by 1.1%.

65% of the market is occupied by the segment of loose raw meat, 16% by sausages and 12% by sausages. Only 6% of the market comes from packaged meat.

The Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper conducted a survey and found out what criteria consumers use when choosing meat. It turned out that an equal number of consumers prefer packaged or unpackaged meat. 35% focus on brand reputation, 20% on cost. The remaining 45% carefully study the composition and expiration date before buying meat in the supermarket.

For example, unmarried men and housewives are likely to choose different meat products for dinner. The former will prefer semi-finished products that can be easily prepared in a short time. Housewives, in turn, prefer to buy meat in large packages, which allows them to prepare a dish for the whole family and save money.

For low-income people, meat products may not be a frequent item on the shopping list. Among the most popular meat products in this group are a variety of offal, minced meat and semi-finished products.

People with average and above average incomes are often interested in “eco-products,” that is, products that were made from poultry and livestock meat raised in certain conditions. Such products tend to be more expensive.

What is meat branding and why is it needed?

To turn an ordinary consumer product into a recognizable brand, it is important to conduct a competent one. This helps to differentiate from competitors, improve the manufacturer’s reputation and increase profits. A well-thought-out strategy for promoting a meat brand encourages buyers to make a choice in your favor.
