ISO 216 tolerances for C size paper are the same as for A and B size sheets of paper and are as follows:
  • ± 1.5 mm (0.06 in.) For sizes up to 150 mm (5.9 in.)
  • ± 2 mm (0.08 in.) For sizes ranging from 150 to 600 mm (5.9 to 23.6 in.)
  • ± 3 mm (0.12 in.) For any dimension above 600 mm (23.6 in.)

Format C Sizing for Envelopes

The C envelope size defines the C (N) size values \u200b\u200bas the geometric mean between the A (N) and B (N) sizes, i.e. the dimensions C4 are the geometric mean of A4 and B4. This results in dimensions between the two sizes, which when made to size envelope is ideal for transporting paper of the same size. For example, a C4 envelope is ideal for unfolded A4 paper.

It should be noted that C-size envelopes also have an aspect ratio equal to the square root of 2, and because of this, an A4 sheet folded parallel to its smaller side will easily fit into a C5 envelope, and when folded twice more will correspond to a C6 envelope.

The following diagrams show how C4, C5 and C6 envelopes compare in comparison with a sheet of A4 paper (the envelope is shown in brown, and the sheet of paper in gray), as you can see in the first diagram, a C4 envelope can accommodate an entire A4 sheet. A C5 envelope can hold an A4 sheet folded in half (A5 sheet) and a C6 envelope can hold an A4 sheet folded in half twice (A6 sheet). This is the reason that sometimes these envelopes are referred to as A4, A5 or A6 envelopes.

DL envelope format for business correspondence

DL envelope format for business correspondence

One of the most widely used business envelopes is the DL format. It does not fit in the C format because it has different proportions with the series. This envelope first appeared in Germany in the 1920s and was known as DIN Lang, but DL is now more often deciphered as "Dimension Lengthwise". This value is defined in the ISO standards for envelopes, as the standard for the most commonly used size of business envelopes.

The DL size is 110x220mm (4⅓ "x8⅔") and as such a DL envelope holds an A4 sheet of paper folded into 3 equal parts parallel to its smaller side.

Despite complaints from auto sealer manufacturers that this size is a little small for reliable packing and the introduction of C6 / 5 envelopes with a size of 114x229mm, the original DL size continues to be the most commonly used.
