Since ancient times, our ancestors have used down and feathers to make useful household products. Domestic chickens, turkeys and geese even today give us the opportunity to make a variety of crafts from bird feathers with our own hands: soft pillows, warm feather beds, decorations for hats, toys, unusual souvenirs.

Preparation of material

Before making a craft from feathers, they need to be collected and properly cleaned, because they can be dirty. In addition, the beards of the feathers are covered with fat, which should be removed. To do this, they are tied to a stick with the feather down and dipped in a solution of water, soda and soap brought to a boil. Within an hour the feathers will be clean. All that remains is to rinse them thoroughly and dry them. If the feathers are small, then you can wash them in bulk.

Bird feathers can be dyed in various colors using aniline dyes or tsapon varnish. Large feathers can be painted with paints designed for tinting silk. Want to bleach colored feathers? Degrease them, soak them in a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution for a day, then refresh the solution twice. After three days the feathers will be snow-white.

To ensure that feather crafts retain their original appearance longer, it is worth covering them with tsapon varnish using a spray bottle. After drying, they will be ready for use.

Be extremely careful so that this exciting handicraft does not harm your health!

Applique of poplar fluff and feathers

Poplar fluff is another natural material that can be used to make crafts. It has one peculiarity: it appears only once a year in the summer and covers the ground with warm, fluffy “snow”. Poplar fluff is well used in applications to imitate snow, clouds, hare fur, etc.

Lesson 1. “Winter” (for the little ones)

You will need: blue cardboard, white gouache, paint brush, PVA glue, glue brush, pencil, napkin, poplar fluff.

Stages of work:

■ The child draws clouds on cardboard. Help him if necessary.

■ Using a paintbrush, apply glue inside one cloud.

■ Carefully place the fluff on the glue and press lightly with a napkin.

Quills have already ceased to be used as a writing instrument, and pillows are stuffed with them less and less, but creative personalities Today we found a use for them. So, for example, the works of Julia Thompson have already been noted in Monemo. But now we will not talk about drawings on feathers, but about paintings made from feathers.

Brings back memories of Gogol's work "Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka"

Ukrainian craftswoman from Donetsk Marina Nesterova creates her appliqué paintings using, instead of paints, nothing more than bird feathers, skillfully selected in color and size. At first glance, it may seem that the picture is simply painted on canvas, but, after taking a closer look, you begin to notice that each “brush stroke” is a separate feather, skillfully glued to the canvas.

As for the material itself for painting, don’t worry, not a single bird was harmed.) Marina orders feathers for her works from pet stores or purchases them from bird breeders. What is noteworthy: the artist did not use artificial dye in any of her paintings; each feather has its own natural color.

The subjects of Marina Nesterova’s works are quite diverse. Among her paintings you can find surprisingly realistic drawings of animals, colorful flower still lifes, and narrative paintings from the life of a Ukrainian village. Each application is original in its own way and made with incredible precision. You can admire such works to your heart’s content.)

In addition to paintings, the artist also makes miniature embroidery on thimbles, floristry, silk painting, and ceramics. The works of this craftswoman are in the private collections of the presidents of Ukraine and Russia, and are also very often presented as gifts to foreign ministers and ambassadors. Marina Nesterova is not a rare guest at various applied art exhibitions in Europe.
