Downloading books to third-party apps via iTunes

Uploading books via OPDS catalogs

OPDS is a handy system for finding books. The best OPDS catalogs allow you to search for books by author, book title, series, genre, and more. In these directories, you can usually read the description of the book, see the cover, and even download the book to your device.

If you want to use OPDS catalogs, you need to find out if the App Store reader supports this format. Usually this is stated in the description.

For example, KyBook 2 supports OPDS catalogs. There are several pre-installed, but you can add your own.

Uploading books via cloud storage

Some readers support cloud storage. A fairly convenient way is to store the library in the cloud and upload books to the program as needed.

What is needed for this? Registration in cloud storage (Dropbox, Yandex Disk, Cloud Mail and others). Upload your collection of books there. Cloud connection in the reading application.

After that, you can climb the cloud storage directly from the reader, search for the book you need, download and read.

If your reader does not support the cloud, then you need to download a client for cloud storage from the App Store. And open in the reader from it.

About iBooks

iBooks is great way reading and buying books. Download this free program from the App Store and shop for a variety of books from classics to bestsellers using the built-in iBookstore. Once the book is downloaded, it will appear on your bookshelf.

Add ePub books and PDF files to your bookshelf with using iTunes. Just click on a book or PDF document to start reading. iBooks remembers the last page you opened, so you can easily pick up where you left off. A wide range of screen settings makes reading books easier

Note: The iBooks app and iBookstore are not available in all languages ​​or in all regions.

Downloading iBooks and using the iBookstore requires an Internet connection and an Apple account. If you don't have an Apple account, or want to make a purchase using a different Apple account, go to Settings > Store. See Shop 46.

Synchronization of books and PDF files

Use iTunes to sync books and PDF files between iPhone and computer. When iPhone is connected to your computer, you can select items to sync from the Books panel.

You can sync books downloaded for free or purchased from the iBookstore. You can also add non-DRM ePub books and PDF files to your iTunes library. Books in ePub and PDF formats are offered on a number of websites.

Sync an ePub book or PDF file to1RIopeUpload a book or PDF file using a computer. In iTunes, choose File > Add to Library, and then select a file. Connect your iPhone to your computer, select a book or PDF from the Books panel in iTunes, then sync your iPhone.

If the PDF file does not appear in the Books panel, you need to change its type in iTunes. Locate this PDF file in your iTunes library, select it, then click File > Properties. In the Options section of the file information window, select Book from the Media Type pop-up menu and click OK.

Using iBookstore

in the iBooks app, select Store to open the iBookstore. Here you can view books from various collections and bestsellers, search for books by author or topic. After selecting a book, you can buy and download it.

Note: Some iBookstore features are not available in all regions.

Getting more information.In the iBookstore, you can read a book's summary and reviews, write a review, and download a book snippet before you buy it.

Buying a book. Find the book you want, touch its price and then touch "Buy now". Sign in to your Apple account, then click OK. Some books can be downloaded for free.

Payment for the purchase is debited from your Apple account. You do not need to re-enter your password to make further purchases within the next fifteen minutes.

If you have already purchased a book and would like to redownload it, click "Purchases" in the iBookstore and find the book you want in the list. Then click "Redownload".

Purchased books will be synced to your iTunes library the next time you sync iPhone to your computer. This creates a backup copy of the book in case you delete it from your iPhone.

Reading books

Reading books on the iPad is very convenient. Go to the bookshelf and click on the book you want to read. If you can't find the book you're looking for, tap another collection's name at the top of the screen to navigate to other collections.

Reading PDF files

Skip to content.Tap the screen near the center of the current page to show the controls, and tap an item to go to it, or tap Next to return to the current page. If the author hasn't included any content in the book, you can simply tap the desired page to jump to it.

Changing the look of a book

Search for books and PDF files

By searching for books by title or author, you can quickly find a book on a bookshelf. You can also search the contents of a book to find all occurrences of a word or phrase that interests you. You can also search Wikipedia and Google to find all related resources.

Book search. Go to the bookshelf. Select a different collection if necessary. Tap the status bar to scroll to the top of the screen, then tap the magnifying glass icon. Enter a word from the title of the book or the author's name, then click Search. Books matching the search results will be shown on the bookshelf.

To search Google or Wikipedia, tap Search Google or Search

Look up the definition of a word in a dictionary

Using a dictionary, you can look up the definition of a word.

Look up the meaning of a word in a dictionary.Select a word in the book and click Dictionary from the menu that appears. Dictionaries may not be available in all languages.

Reading the text of the book

If you are visually impaired, you can use VoiceOver to read a book aloud. See "Voice Over" 66.

Some books may not be compatible with VoiceOver.

Printing PDF files and transferring them via e-mail

With iBooks, you can send a copy of a PDF file via email, or print all or part of the PDF to a supported printer.

Sending a PDF file via email.Open a PDF document, click and select Send Document. A new message will appear with an attached PDF file. Enter the recipient's address and message text, then click Send.

Printing a PDF file. Open a PDF document, click and select Print. Select your printer, page range, and number of copies, then click Print. See the "Printing" section for details.

You can only print and email PDF files. For books in ePub format, these actions are not available.

Bookshelf Organization

Bookshelf provides convenient search for books and PDF files. Objects can also be organized into collections.

Sorting bookshelf.Go to the bookshelf and touch the status bar to scroll to the top of the screen, then touch to select a sorting method from the list below.

Change the arrangement of objects on the bookshelf.Click a book or PDF file and drag it to a new position on the bookshelf.

Removing a book from a bookshelf.Go to the bookshelf and click Edit. Click each book or PDF you want to delete so that checkboxes appear next to them, then click Delete. When the removal is complete, click Finish. If you have deleted a purchased book, you can redownload it using the Purchases tab in the iBookstore. If you have synced your device with your computer, the book is also saved in your iTunes library.

Create, rename, and delete a collection.Tap the name of the current collection, such as "Books" or "PDF" to see a list of collections. Click "New" to add a new collection. To delete a collection, click Edit, click and click Delete. You cannot edit or delete the built-in Books and PDF collections. To change the collection name, click it. Click "Finish" when finished.

Move a book or PDF file to a collection.Go to the bookshelf and click Edit. Click each book or PDF you want to move so that checkboxes appear next to them, then click Move and select a collection. An element can only be in one collection. The first time a book or PDF is added to a bookshelf, it is placed in the Books or PDF collections; respectively. You can then move these objects to another collection. For example, you can create collections of books for work and study, collections of reference and entertainment literature.

View collection.Touch the name of the current collection at the top of the screen and select the desired one from the list that appears.

Sync bookmarks and notes

iBooks saves bookmarks, notes, and information about the current page to your Apple account, keeping that information up to date so you can instantly continue reading on any device. In PDF documents, bookmarks and information about the current page are synchronized.

Enable or disable bookmark synchronization.Go to Settings > iBooks and turn Sync Bookmarks on or off.

Internet connection required to sync settings iBooks syncs information for all your books when you open or exit the app. Individual workbooks are also synced when they are opened or closed.

The iBooks app only made it to Apple's desktop operating system with the release of OS X Mavericks. Without a doubt, this is a great reading tool. But today we will go a little beyond and tell you how you can find all the downloaded books in the Finder.

How do I find downloaded books and documents in my iBooks library?

It's not hard at all to do this.

We will see a new window with folders. What is stored in them?

• Books folder - this is where all your books, PDFs, documents are stored. The files are stored in the same format in which they were added.
• "Downloads" folder - all downloaded files are in this location until they get directly into the library.
• Temporary Folder - As the name suggests, this is where some temporary files can be found.
• Updates folder - New versions of the iBooks application are stored here, up to the time they are installed.

If you need to remove all files from iBooks, don't do it through the Finder. This can cause some iCloud sync issues. This method is only suitable for downloading a source file from a library.

It turns out that we also have the opportunity to have a similar cloud storage of books, with synchronization and a huge selection of literature available within a tiny subscription fee the size of one coffee in a cafe.

Synchronization like Amazon or iBooks

The main yummy of the service for me is that on all the devices on which I have Bookmate installed, I have my entire library. And if I started reading a book at home on the iPad, then in the morning I can continue reading from the last sentence I read in the subway - if only I had access to the Internet when the application was launched. Notes and bookmarks are also synchronized through the cloud, which is very convenient if you write book reviews on your blog.

Looking for a new one

The Friends section is well done in Bookmate. Just find who is on the service via Facebook or Twitter and subscribe to its news. I very often find interesting things from my acquaintances and friends.

So, the question in this lesson is as follows: we have an iPad and an iPhone, and on both gadgets we would like read the same book, while it is desirable that the device remembers which page you stopped on.

For these purposes, I recommend the application SHOTBOOK. This is one of the best readers for iOS. And now the question is: how to make the books synchronize, and after reading the book on the iPhone, we could continue reading it on the iPad without remembering the page, without making bookmarks, and so on. Everything is very simple. I give you a diagram.

This one has a very handy feature that allows you to iCloud sync all the books downloaded to the device between the rest of their devices, and also this function remembers the page on which we stopped reading. Having read a book somewhere on the road on our iPhone, we can continue reading on the iPad from the moment we left off. To do this, you just need to activate iCloud, then turn it on in the program and have Internet access for instant synchronization.

On your smartphone or tablet, where applications have already been downloaded to the device, go to Settings and find the iCloud menu.

Make sure that iCloud Drive enabled if not then enable it yourself.

Now open the SHOTBOOK application and go to the Settings menu. We find the line iCloud.

We go there and press the button Activate iCloud.

It will start and change to the Active status. All your books and pages where you stopped reading will be downloaded to iCloud. It remains to do these operations on a second device, for example, on a tablet, that is, enable iCloud in the settings and run it in the SHOTBOOK reader itself, books from the iPhone will also be displayed on the iPad.
