Series C Tolerances Envelope size

ISO 216 tolerances for paper sizes C envelopes are the same as for A and B paper sizes and are as follows:
  • ± 1.5 mm (0.06 in.) for sizes up to 150 mm (5.9 in.)
  • ± 2 mm (0.08 in) for sizes 150 to 600 mm (5.9 to 23.6 in)
  • ± 3 mm (0.12 in.) for any dimension above 600 mm (23.6 in.)

Format C sizing for envelopes

Envelope format C defines the C (N) size values as the geometric mean between the sizes of the A (N) and B (N) formats, i.e. dimensions C4 is the geometric mean of A4 and B4. This results in sizes that fall between the two sizes, which, when made to size, would be ideal for transporting paper of the same size. For example, a C4 envelope is ideal for a sheet of A4 paper when unfolded.

It should be noted that C envelopes also have an aspect ratio equal to the square root of 2, and because of this, an A4 sheet folded parallel to its smaller side will easily fit into a C5 envelope, and folded twice more will fit a C6 envelope.

The following diagrams show how C4, C5 and C6 envelopes compare with an A4 sheet of paper (the envelope is shown in brown and the sheet of paper in gray), as you can see in the first diagram, a C4 envelope can fit an entire A4 sheet, A C5 envelope can hold an A4 sheet folded in half (A5 sheet) and a C6 envelope can hold an A4 sheet folded in half twice (A6 sheet). This is the reason why these envelopes are sometimes referred to as A4, A5 or A6 size envelopes.

Envelope format DL sizes for business correspondence

DL envelope format for business correspondence

One of the most widely used business envelopes is the DL format. It does not fit into the C format because it has different proportions than the series. This envelope first appeared in Germany in the 1920s and was known as DIN Lang, but DL is now more commonly spelled Dimension Lengthwise. This value is defined in the ISO Envelope Standards as the standard for the most commonly used business envelope size.

The dimensions of the DL format are 110x220 mm (4⅓"x8⅔") and as such a DL envelope contains a sheet of A4 paper folded into 3 equal parts parallel to its smaller side.

Despite complaints from manufacturers of automatic sealers that this format is a bit small for secure packaging and the introduction of C6/5 envelopes with a size of 114x229mm, the original DL size continues to be the most commonly used.
