Why OOO and not LLC?

LLC (Limited Liability Company) is often translated into English as Limited Liability Company or LLC. The British language uses Limited Trade Development (Ltd.). Moreover, the legal form is indicated after the name of the company (examples: Associated Hotels, LLC; Supranational Hotels Ltd.).

But there is still a certain difference between our LLC and the English LLC / Ltd, and in some cases such a renaming of the company can lead to problems. In addition, as translators on the TranslatorsCafé forum note, the term LLC indicates American realities, while OOO is a purely Russian phenomenon. Therefore, keeping the legal form in its original form, we emphasize the fact that the organization operates in our country.

Yes, translators agree that these abbreviations can also be safely transliterated. But we believe that in the case of TIN, KPP and classifiers, it is still better to indicate the translation of the term in full, and add the abbreviation in Latin in brackets.

Let's explain with the example of TIN.

If you just transliterate

We take the TIN and transliterate. We get INN. The resulting abbreviation may be understandable to a Russian person without context, but for the English language it will be alien. We do not decipher OOO, ZAO, because there is a company name next to it, and INN has only a number next to it, that is, it is not clear from the context what the term is.

If deciphered and translated

We decipher the TIN, translate and get the Taxpayer Identification Number. To make it clear what has been decrypted and translated, we add the transliteration (INN) in brackets, and next to it is the number. It is better not to create a new abbreviation from the translated phrase (in this case TIN), it may simply not be used in the target language or used, but with a different meaning. If the original term is very narrow, you can give a detailed explanation: INN (an identification number used by the Internal Revenue Service in the administration of tax laws), but in the case of details, this will only overload the translation.

The bank details of an internal Russian account are different from international ones. We believe that it is better to translate "settlement account" by a more general term, but one should be more careful with the BIC.

Each country has its own accounts. In the UK, companies open a Current Account, in the US - a Checking Account, in Australia - a Transaction Account. In order not to endow our settlement accounts with these features, it is better to simply specify Account. This is the most versatile and understandable option.

BIC (Bank Identification Code) after decryption is perfectly translated into English as Bank Identifier Code and is abbreviated beautifully: BIC. And even a cursory search on the net seems to confirm the translator's decision. But no, it's better not to translate our BIC. The abbreviations are similar, only our BIC consists of 9 digits, and BIC, which is also called the SWIFT code, includes from 8 to 11 characters (numbers and letters). In order not to create confusion, we use the special abbreviation RCBIC (Russian Central Bank Identification Code) for our code.

There is no need to translate the street as street or look for an adequate translation equivalent for an alley or a village. So you only complicate the life of the postman. We type the address in Latin "as is" (for cities and countries, you can use the established options), but always from smallest to largest: first the house number with the street, then the buildings, letters, then the numbers of apartments, offices or premises, then the city, then the index and the country at the very end. This is the international standard.

Despite the fact that the contract is not shown in the mail, when exchanging correspondence, many companies take the address of the counterparty from the contract. Therefore, when translating, it is logical to rely on the recommendations of postal services, which advise listing address data from smallest to largest. Nevertheless, not everyone in Russia follows these recommendations, so it is often necessary to "turn over" the address

Every even slightly advanced user of the English language had to deal with the translation of Russian-language documents.
