Hi all! Today I will show how to do electronic library on your computer. There is a very functional and convenient program for this!

Home library - book accounting program

First, download the program. By the way, you can always download the latest version.

The site has a portable version, without installation and a regular one, choose which one you like best. During installation, the program will ask for your e-book, I just chose android phone, like my phone)

The program control is located in the top panel.

To begin with, I customized the column on the left and removed unnecessary categories. To control, just right-click in the left column.

How to add books?

To add a book or books, you need to select add books.

Now, in order to drag a book to the desired category, you need to move it with the mouse, picking up the author column.

How to convert a book to another format

In addition to organizing books and reading, the program can also convert books! In order to convert a book to another format, click on the desired book and select convert books.

In this window you can also edit all the book data, so this is also e-book editing program!

Click ok and the task completion icon will appear at the bottom.

I converted the book to docx format and now I have a new format in the formats section.

I talked about all the important functions. The program can also collect news and search for books. For those who constantly read and collect a home library, this program will be very useful.

You can even search for books in this program. There are a lot of books, and what’s interesting is that some of the paid ones can be viewed for free))) She is looking for books all over the world, so if you need a Russian one, immediately look for them in Russian. The program is simple in principle, I think whoever is interested will quickly figure it out and download some interesting books or news!)))

I love books very much, and recently wrote about how you can.

The electronic library poses no less of a problem; it clutters up gigabytes no less than paper books clutter up cabinets and shelves. Having come across a description of an interesting book on the Internet, I immediately download it and it often happens that I simply forget to read it, because something else no less interesting immediately comes across.

My “Books” folder, in general, is quite organized - divided into categories by genre, within genres - by author, I immediately put freshly downloaded books into the right folders. However, to me, spoiled technical progress, it already seems inconvenient to go into “Books” every time, look for what I haven’t read yet, unzip each file, remember what I read and where I stopped, what I was going to read and what I didn’t have time to download, etc.

Therefore, the task arose - to find a convenient program for organizing e-books. Which would, firstly, store all downloaded books, sorting by authors and genres, secondly, allow you to make marks on e-books read and planned to read, and thirdly - sewed my caftans and mended my boots I knew how to read different formats and allowed me to leave comments on the books I read.

Having collected the results of my searches, I wrote this review.

So, review of programs for organizing and reading e-books:

1. ICE Book Reader— a convenient reader and part-time cataloguer. What it can do:

  • stores e-books in a huge number(up to 250,000 pieces). Moreover, it stores the book files, and not the paths to them. That is, if you move the book file on your computer to another location, this will in no way affect the operation of the program, the book will still be available
  • sorts them into collections
  • convenient division into categories (by author, by genre, marked for reading, etc.)
  • search implemented using a variety of criteria
  • supports different formats, including archives
  • a huge number of settings for comfortable reading (I won’t even list what functions there are) Special attention deserves automatic scrolling - when the text itself crawls across the page, completely invisible to the eye
  • using a wireless mouse as a control panel, you can read even from the other end of the room (by setting, of course, a larger font)
  • can read aloud to you (though this is not for the faint of heart)
  • makes bookmarks
  • and a lot more (one of the extremely useful things that really stuck with me was the built-in alarm clock)

Looking ahead, I will say that this is where I made my final choice. Although, as you know, all felt-tip pens are different in taste and color. So read on.

2.BookShelf- an amazingly beautiful program with an originally implemented interface. When you open the program, a real bookshelf appears before your eyes, on which stand the books that you put there. On the spines are the names and size in kilobytes. Click and read. A large number of fine reading settings that allow you to read with the greatest comfort for you, and - oh, how the bookmark function is implemented! Use a green maple leaf as a bookmark! (However, you can upload your own bookmarks)

3. BookSeer- another cataloging program. It sorts books by author, genre, shows when you last opened the book and what percentage you read. Interesting feature this program - it does not require installation. That is, you can write books to a flash drive, install BookSeer there, add books to the catalog of this program and read wherever you want, from any computer. The downside is that it stores in its database not the books themselves, but links to them. That is, if the book file is moved or deleted, she will no longer be able to read it. However, this problem can be solved by writing relative paths to the file. But these are technical details. There are not very many reading settings, or rather, quite a few. But this program is quite universal; with its help you can catalog not only books, but also videos, links and in general, everything that can be catalogued.

4. Total Book Organizer- a simple but clever program. With one movement of the hand, it will add all your books to its database, scattering them into categories. It will be issued in a neat form - with a cover and brief description. You can sort books as you wish - by author, by genre, by keywords etc. There is a “Gonna Read” section, which I really liked.

5.All My Books- this shareware program will independently find in Internet sources and download for you the necessary books by title, author or ISBN number. Provides complete information about the book - year of publication, names of translators, reviews, annotations, binding, circulation and colorful cover (in case this is important to someone). Visualize your library using templates. Export, import, search for various specified conditions. There is such a necessary thing as a manager of given books (so as not to forget who took what from you to read)

6.FB2 Librarian— initially this librarian program was developed for reading books exclusively in the fb2 format, but the latest versions provide support for other formats used in e-books (however, in this case a minimal manual description is required). The program can change skins, it is possible to insert your own ratings and comments. Convenient search, breakdown into categories and sorting according to different criteria.

7. LibRus— a cataloger of e-books, “tailored” for the Librusek library. That is, the program databases are updated directly from the Librusec website. I don’t even know what to say, where are the pros and where are the cons. Have not tried. A Librusek in Lately became half paid, which is not encouraging.

8. MyHomeLib— this program allows you to create an unlimited number of collections of books, sort them as you wish, work with lists of books in tabular mode, as well as find out ratings and reviews of books, and leave comments. It is possible to connect external libraries, including the ubiquitous Librusek. There are a lot of functions for working with e-books.

9. PSD Home Library is paid (500 rubles), but a convenient program for cataloging books and maintaining a home library.

If you have anything to add to this list, add it in the comments!

It is difficult now to find a person who does not read books. Electronic, audiobooks or traditional paper books of different genres. They read everywhere, but it is especially pleasant to do it at home. And then the day comes when there are a lot of books. Finding a book of interest is already becoming difficult. It’s hard to remember whether the book you’ve been looking for for half a day is at home, or whether it was given to a friend and he forgot to return it! And then the need arises to create a home library catalog, because the catalog is a means of monitoring books and keeping the library in order.

Paper catalog

Previously, the owner of a home library began to write his catalog in a notebook or on special forms, where he entered information about the available books, their location in the cabinets, as well as notes if the book was given to someone. A very inconvenient way!

With this type of directory management, it is very difficult to edit entries, because It is necessary to provide in advance a place for notes, a place to record data about new arrivals, or a place to write down who is given the book to read.

DIY electronic catalog in MSOffice

Nowadays, you can use MSOffice or OpenOffice to develop a home library catalog. The palm here is traditionally occupied by products from the Microsoft Office suite: Excel and Access. MS Access is a specialized program for creating a data bank (or multi-table databases, catalogues); it has the widest capabilities. For many, this program turns out to be too complicated, and not everyone is ready to understand it for the sake of cataloging their home library.

In this case, preference is given to a simpler program - MS Excel. IN spreadsheets you can create a home library catalog, providing fields for recording all data on books, editing and adding new fields.

Use of special computer programs and mobile applications

Currently, more and more developers are offering ready-made software, which will help you put things in order in your home library. These programs are either shareware or completely free. For example, “All my books” (http://allmybooks.ru/).

The programs have a convenient user interface and a system for searching books in the library. All the user needs to do is enter the title of the book; the rest of the information on the book is delivered from popular online libraries, automatically filling in all the fields in the book card. The programs professionally manage all types of books - most of the formats known today. In addition, if you have e-books or audio books, you can launch them directly from these programs without trying to remember where that particular book is.

The main advantage of these programs is the ability to automatically download data about the book (including the cover) via ISBN or via a link to the Ozone store.

A mobile application for Android for creating electronic notes, Evernote GooglePlay, is a very functional replacement for a regular notepad.

It can also be used to create an electronic catalog for your home library: we photograph the cover of the book, add a description of the book as a note, and save it in a separate directory in the application. To organize books, you can create a QR code from the data for each book, then print it and stick it on the book. A sort of “electronic bookplate”. This approach will help to create an electronic catalog with covers, and exactly those that are in your library.

"Cloud" (virtual) electronic catalog of the home library

Specialized social media, for example, BookMix.ru, great way to create a catalog of your books. The main advantage of creating a catalog on BookMix.ru is the ability to create your own shelf of books and upload the catalog in Excel format. The good thing is that this catalog will be available without an Internet connection.

Each of the proposed methods for organizing books in a home library is good in its own way, which one to choose is up to you.

The material was prepared by L.A. Shutilina.

Internet resources were used in preparing the material:

Free program for keeping track of books in the library.

Computerization is affecting more and more different industries these days. Not so long ago, in Ukraine, we issued a decree on the computerization of libraries educational institutions. And everything would be fine, but only as always, issuing the appropriate hardware and software no one in the ministries cared. So off we go...

Who started creating library databases on a PC using office applications (in Access or Excel), and who started looking for “cracks” for various paid systems library management. However, it turns out that there are quite simple and convenient free programs for this!

Today I will introduce you to one wonderful library management system, developed by our fellow countryman and a simple computer science teacher for the needs of his school. This program is called MyLib. With its help, you can quite easily create a database for the entire library and monitor the issuance of books to students, students or teachers. In terms of its capabilities, MyLib resembles the paid Book Accounting program:

Comparison of the MyLib program with the paid analogue Book Accounting

From the comparison, we see that MyLib is somewhat behind paid applications in terms of functionality. However, the program benefits from a simple and clear interface, and also compensates for some shortcomings thanks to direct access to the database, which can be easily edited using modern office packages.

An additional nice thing is that the application does not require installation :).

In the archive downloaded from our website you will find two versions of MyLib: Russian and Ukrainian. We will look at an example with the Russian version, but everything written below also applies to the Ukrainian version.

For greater convenience, unpack the archive with the desired version of the application into a separate folder on your hard drive, and then run the executable file MyLib.exe. The main program window will open in front of us:

MyLib interface

In the main window we see a list of book authors (column on the left) present in our library, as well as a list and description of books by the selected author (on the right). At the bottom of the main window we can also see information about the issuance of the selected book. At the top of the MyLib working window there are two additional working tabs (Search and Student List), as well as a button for adding new books.

Working with MyLib

We should start our work by creating a database of books. To add a new book to the database, just click the “Add new book” button and enter the required information about it in the window that opens:

Unfortunately, this window does not have some fields, such as ISBN, number of pages and some others, however, if you particularly desire, such fields can be manually added to the program database (how to do this,). Of course, you won’t get access through the program, but this method is quite suitable for printing results from the database;).

Click the “Add” button and get the book you just entered in the list:

Please note that if you have several copies of a book, you will have to add them again!

By selecting a book in the “Author's Books” catalog, you can make changes to the information about it, as well as hand out the book to a student or teacher. To do this, just click the “Issue book” button and enter the reader’s information in the text line that appears. The issue date will be set automatically:

Now, to return the book, we just need to click the “Accept book” button.

Working with third party databases

The student was successfully added, however, for the convenience of working with a large number of people, I would advise creating also reader database. Unfortunately, it is impossible to create such a database using MyLib, but nothing prevents us from filling it out directly using MS Access (preferred) or OO Base. To do this, open the folder where we previously unpacked MyLib and find the data.mdb file:

We will need to open the selected database. The best module for this is Microsoft Office Access. When we try to open a database, Access will ask us whether to block unsafe expressions (to which we will proudly answer “NO” :)) and will again warn us that our actions are unsafe. But we’re not afraid :), so let’s click the “Open” button and see the following window:

It’s easy to guess that to create a database of readers, we need to open the “Pupils” table by double-clicking on it with the left mouse button:

In the table that opens, we will initially find only two lines. The first will indicate the student we created earlier (in the example - Ivan Petrovich Ivanov), and the second will be empty (except for the inscription (Counter) in the first cell).

Now we need to select the line with our first reader (by left-clicking on the square in front of the line) and, calling up the context menu with the right mouse button, select “Copy”. Now, in a similar way, select an empty line (labeled (Counter)) and select “Insert” in the context menu.

We will have a copy of the previous record, in which we only need to change the data in the “Name” column to the required ones. Since MyLib does not have a special field to indicate the class in which the student is studying, it would be best if you indicate the class or group number before the student’s full name;).

This way, you can quickly find all your readers in a fairly large database. Fortunately, MyLib sorts all entries alphabetically, so you can safely add new library users in any order.

So, we created a database of readers. It's time to look at the fruits of your work. To do this, launch MyLib and go to its third tab - “Students and issued books”:

Here we will see a neat list of all our readers, and to the right of them is a number that indicates the number of books they took. If a student returns a book to you, just highlight him in the list, select the book he is returning and click the “Accept” button. The book will again be in public access, and it can be issued again.

Search by database

The last feature we need to check is the search function. Go to the second tab of the program (“Search for books”):

Here we have two search options: by author or by book title. We select the one that is most suitable for us, fill in the corresponding text field, click the “Search” button and get the result in the list below. Please note that if a book matching the specified search parameters is not in the database, the list will remain empty and you will not see any additional notifications.

Advantages and disadvantages of the program

  • simple interface and program management;
  • unlimited number of records in databases;
  • availability of direct access to the main program database;
  • convenient system for tracking issued books;
  • the presence of a convenient search mechanism in the book database.
  • there is no built-in reader list editor;
  • there is no function for importing, exporting and printing data from the program;
  • There is no way to add additional fields to book descriptions.

conclusions

Despite the rather significant shortcomings, after skillful “processing with a file,” the MyLib program becomes an indispensable tool for any librarian! However, you can use the application not only in institutions, but also as a cataloger for your home library.

This use case is generally ideal, since you won’t have to manually edit the database at all, and you will add new readers (friends and acquaintances who borrow books from you) as needed. Using MyLib, you will always know who, when and what books you took, which means you will always have your entire library under supervision.
